Learning in Woodpeckers

Our curriculum this term will be inspired by the story, ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. The children will study this book and, later in the half term, they will write their own finding tale. The children will gain a greater understanding of the world around them, by considering some world issues, such as deforestation and they will also learn about coastal processes. Electricity, our Science topic this term, will also link to the topic.

In maths, the children will be developing their place value understanding, before moving onto calculation skills. We will also be re-capping many mental skills, such as the times tables. Please look at the Maths No Problem page on the school website, which outlines the approaches we use in lessons.

In RE, the children will consider, ‘How should we live and who should inspire us?’ which also links well with this half term’s value of generosity.

Playground Leaders

The Year 6 children will be continuing with the Playground Leaders scheme this year. This allows the older children in the school to take an active role in supporting their younger peers at playtimes. Support and training will be provided by staff from Court Fields, as well as Mr Parsons.

PE with Mr Parsons will take place on Mondays. However, children should have the appropriate kit in school every day. This includes a blue t-shirt, shorts and trainers or plimsoles.

Very soon, the children will all have weekly homework. All children will have a set of spellings to learn, which will be tested on Mondays. Additionally, the children will have three study books – Maths, Reading and Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (GPS). They will complete one page of each book every week. Your support with this will make a huge impact on their learning. Homework will be sent out every Thursday and must be in on the following Tuesday.  This allows time for marking work and addressing any needs. Please see a member of the Woodpecker Class team, if your child is having any difficulties with their homework.
